At Home Gallery is located in a former synagogue in Šamorín, 25 kilometers from Dunajská Streda. The Šamorín synagogue was built on a traditional principle; the architectural complex included a Jewish school, a ritual Jewish bath, as well as other social buildings. At Home Gallery in the former Jewish prayer house in Šamorín is a place where progressive art meets tradition. The synagogue was built in the early 20th century and served its original purpose until World War II, after which only a few families remained in the city from what had been a relatively large Jewish community. In the late 1990s, a new chapter in the synagogue’s history opened when a unique gallery was created in its spaces. At Home Gallery actively supports international cultural dialogue. In this context, it is worth mentioning that in 2000, His Holiness the Dalai Lama XIV visited the synagogue to complete a sand mandala made by Tibetan monks. The Dalai Lama ceremoniously opened the House of Art, which today serves as a place for artists’ residencies and is located in the former Jewish school’s premises.
