The water tower was a key component of the municipal water supply system, providing drinking water to the entire town of Komárno as well as to part of present-day Hungarian Komárom (Új Szőny). Before its construction, residents relied on water from the Váh and Danube rivers, using simple sand filtration. It was one of the oldest facilities of this type in western Slovakia (after Bratislava and Trenčín). In the first years of operation, it was capable of supplying drinking water to approximately 35,000 people.

Today, it is no longer in regular operation due to increased pressure levels in the modern water supply system; however, it has retained its operational readiness and structural integrity. The exterior was last renovated in 1973, while the technological components underwent maintenance in the 1960s. The structure is regarded as a technical monument and a symbol of the town.

In 2025, the water tower returned to the ownership of the town of Komárno through the local water utility company KOMVaK, underscoring its cultural and symbolic importance for the town. Public space improvements have been carried out around the tower, and the site is becoming an attractive focal point for the public.
