There are 92 hectares in the heart of the Žitný osrov. It is one of the smallest yet richest aquatic ecosystems in Slovakia. The area around the lakes is an island of tranquility for aquatic animals, a true little paradise. The value of this territory is primarily due to its importance for the nesting of water birds. A total of 65 bird species have been observed here, of which 51 species are associated with water, and 21 species nest here. The site is a textbook example of how a facility originally intended for human use can benefit rare and protected bird species. The area is protected for the benefit of three bird species of European importance: the Eurasian bittern, the little grebe, and the common pochard. It is also an important nesting site for the nationally significant marsh warbler and the sedge warbler. In addition, important and rare species such as the marsh harrier, the little crake, and the great reed warbler also nest here.
