The church was originally dedicated to Saint Thomas. The presbytery of the old church with a flat closure may have been an original 13th-century chapel, which was expanded at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries with a nave and a projecting tower in early Gothic style, including several Romanesque architectural elements. Stone ciboria were added on both sides of the altar, a very rare architectural feature in Slovakia. The building is documented in records from 1315. The older part of the church (small tower and nave) is built on the oldest (original) 11th-century church. The church was repaired in the second half of the 16th century, but Turkish invasions caused significant damage, so it was restored in 1762, though an earthquake in 1764 again damaged it. Further repairs took place in the first half of the 19th century. At the beginning of the 20th century, the church was expanded in a Neo-Romanesque style, with the old building becoming the northern side nave of the new church and the old presbytery becoming the sacristy. The new church was consecrated on September 25, 1910.
