In 1994, the city leadership set an ambitious goal, based on the plans of architect Imre Makovecz, to give Dunaszerdahely a new identity by restoring the former patina of the townscape, which had been distorted during the communist era.
In 1995, work began on shaping the city’s new image according to the visions of the world-renowned architect Makovecz. Initially, parts of the buildings along Main Street were reconstructed, followed by the addition of an impressive tower to the town hall. This was followed by the expansion of the Fontána shopping centre with a restaurant section, and later the construction of the Postabank building complex. This complex was designed to evoke the former Great Synagogue, which once stood on the site of the former General Health Insurance building.
The reconstruction of Church Square also served this city-beautification purpose. Previously, much of the old town had been almost entirely demolished, and the Catholic church was surrounded and obscured by blocks of flats. According to Makovecz’s concept, the aim was to soften the impact of this residential development, and on the square the traditional architectural styles of the Csallóköz region were brought back to life.
