The Statue of Mór Jókai

The Statue of Mór Jókai stands in the centre of Komárno and commemorates one of the greatest Hungarian writers of the 19th century, who was born in the town. The bronze statue was unveiled in 1937 to mark the centenary of Jókai’s birth and is one of the city’s best-known monuments.

Mór Jókai (1825–1904) was a renowned novelist, playwright, and journalist. His works were often inspired by Hungarian history, nature, and contemporary society. His birthplace, Komárno, appears in several of his novels, and the city continues to honour the memory of its distinguished native son.
